How to Commission a Portrait

Photographs

Portraits are easy to commission regardless of distance, as they are drawn from photographs that you provide. Ideally, all I will need is a clear close up photo which can either be emailed or posted to me. All original photographs will be returned in the condition that they were received.

The better the photograph the better the portrait as the more detail that I am able to see, the more detail I can then include within the drawing.

Portrait options

Once I have received the photograph, I shall provide a number of portrait options for you to choose from, confirming the price and timescale for each one. You can then take your pick or, if you aren’t 100% happy, I’ll gladly repeat the process with other photographs until you are.  Prices quoted include insured delivery.

Payment

Once you have chosen which portrait option you would like me to draw, I will then need a 50% deposit to confirm your booking. This can either be paid using a bank transfer or by cheque. Payment details will be provided at this time.

The portrait balance is asked for once the commission is finished and of course, you are more than welcome to see a preview of your finished portrait before final payment is made.

Portrait size

Portrait size is completely flexible. I usually find that the A4 and A3 sizes are popular for a single subject, and that the A3 and A2 sizes are preferred if there is more than one subject.

A1 portraits are also an option. Individual quotes are given for this size as it very much depends on the content and timescale needed to complete the commission.

Framing

Most clients are keen to choose their own frame and mount so I do not include these although I can recommend combinations which will show off your portrait perfectly.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Portrait commissions can be booked prior to the photograph being sent. If this applies, I will need the photo and subsequent portrait option confirmed at least two weeks before the portrait is due to start. Should this not be possible, a new date for your portrait booking will be arranged.

Each deposit will be held for a period of twelve months. If, through no fault of my own, the commission is not completed within twelve months of the deposit being paid, the portrait will be cancelled and the full deposit will not be refunded.
